Steve earned a B.A. cum laude from Dartmouth College and a Masters in Marketing from Northwestern Kellogg School of Management. After many years as a successful marketing/advertising executive, he found his true calling: helping children discover and reach their full potential as scholars and lifelong learners. He holds a California Clear Multiple Subjects teaching credential with a certification in Gifted and Talented Education (GATE). He has been teaching 4th/5th grade, with 30-50 percent GATE students, at the same Los Angeles Unified School District school since 1998. He has built in-depth knowledge of the California Common Core Standards in Reading, Writing, Math, Science, and Social Science for upper elementary grades. He has both Readers and Writers Workshop training, and uses Eureka Math and the Imagine Math app in his 4th grade classroom. He has quickly adapted to Distance Learning, conducting classes on Zoom with a wide array of resources, including Google Classroom and Google Forms for students and Class Dojo for parents. As one of only 10% of elementary school teachers that are men, he has developed a strong rapport both with male and female students and parents/guardians. He has also mastered the art of differentiated instruction due to the diverse composition of his classes, with students ranging from GATE to far above grade level to far below grade level, including those with IEPs and/or special needs. Steve prides himself on providing a nurturing Growth Mindset environment and adapting his instructional approach to the varied personalities and learning styles of his students.
