The Educational Impact of COVID-19 on Your Child/ Teen
While Covid-19 is a health and economic crisis, it is also an educational crisis that can’t be ignored. In fact, 160 countries have closed schools impacting 1.5 billion and not all students can thrive in the online teaching environment nor are all districts providing an equivalent amount of content to their normal curriculum for the given grade level.
In the best case, students can interact virtually through zoom learning with each other and their teacher as well as receive academic support from their parents. However, this is not the case for the majority of students. Many parents have to work full time and not all families have the resources for online learning for each of their children if they have multiple children in the home. The environment can also be very distracting with noise as well as other technology temptations. In addition, it is just more difficult to focus at home in front of a computer for many hours.Since wealthier families will have more resources and are often more educated resulting in the ability to help their children with difficult common core instruction the achievement gap between rich and poor families that already exists will continue to widen.
So I know you are wondering what can be done to make up for three months of lost education. At this point, summer tutoring will be very important. In a normal school year, students often do not retain all that they have learned, resulting in the “Summer Slide.” It is most important to keep students engaged in Math, Reading, and Writing as this will give them a strong foundation for all their other subject matters. Additionally, the Covid-19 crisis is impacting soft skills necessary for academic success such as patience, perseverance and problem solving ability. These are skills that tutors can reinforce during the summer learning programs that Beach Cities Tutoring is offering. Students are likely watching hours of tv, youtube or playing video games during the time they usually would have been in school or doing homework, and summer is a perfect time to prepare them for the next school year and remediate or preview new challenging material.
Beach Cities Tutoring is offering the following for summer. Tutors and classes are reserved on a first come, first serve basis. We offer individual as well as group tutoring. Summer Writer’s Workshop Private or Small Group Classes

Book Clubs and Reading Comprehension Workshops
Many middle and high school students are asked to read summer novels. Beach Cities Tutoring can help lead interactive reading groups and help students highlight important information, analyze key concepts and help with annotation for future writing assignments. For elementary students, we offer reading workshops that will help your child improve their active reading comprehension and vocabulary strategies. This is crucial in ensuring they succeed in all academic subjects. Especially with the Common Core curriculum, reading and writing are heavily intertwined in all subject areas, including Science and Math. We can also assess your child’s current reading level for an additional cost. We also offer facilitated fun book clubs for elementary students to discuss and talk about literature.
Summer Spanish Workshops!
We offer Spanish tutoring for all levels including those 4 years old through university level. Our native speakers make learning Spanish fun and ensure your child will be able to read, write and speak. Most 4 year universities require 3-4 years of a foreign language and being able to speak Spanish will also make your child/teen more competitive in a highly competitive job market.
